Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu has died at the age of 68, his Patriotic Front (PF) party announced yesterday.
He had been receiving specialized medical treatment in South Africa for an undisclosed illness.
Lungu governed Zambia for six years starting in 2015, but lost the 2021 election by a significant margin to the current President, Hakainde Hichilema.
After that defeat, he initially withdrew from politics but later re-entered the political arena with ambitions to contest the presidency again.
However, late last year, the Constitutional Court barred him from running, ruling that he had already served the maximum two terms permitted by law.
