Shehu Sani Reacts As Wike Renames ICC After Tinubu

Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, has objected to the renaming of the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) after President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement, Sani urged President Tinubu to decline the honor, arguing that such monuments shouldn’t be renamed without considering their historical context.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had renamed the center as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre on Tuesday.

The former lawmaker emphasized that the ICC was built under former military President General Ibrahim Babangida (Retd) and symbolizes Nigeria’s unity and diplomatic engagement.

According to Sani, changing its name would “amount to erasing a significant part of Nigeria’s national history.”

He added that while honoring national leaders is appropriate, such recognition should be reserved for new projects or initiatives led by those being celebrated.

“The International Conference Centre Abuja was built by IBB. The President should reject renaming the place with his name,” Senator Sani said.
