Why I Can’t Rule Out Contesting Against Tinubu – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has indicated his readiness to collaborate with the opposition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election, attributing his stance to the escalating economic hardship in Nigeria.

Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor who was runner-up in the 2022 APC presidential primary that nominated Tinubu, stated in a BBC interview that he has not ruled out the possibility of a 2027 presidential bid, suggesting that “time would tell.”

This announcement comes less than a month after APC leaders endorsed Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Meanwhile, opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others, have reportedly been strategizing to unseat Tinubu in 2027.

While affirming his loyalty to the APC, Amaechi stressed that party membership does not obligate him to support a government that is allegedly underperforming.

“If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you are in the same party. You know that is not right. People are dying. People are starving. I myself, I am feeling the effects of hunger. The truth is, I’m also feeling the hunger,” the former minister said.

Although he clarified that he is not currently planning a presidential run, Amaechi maintained it remains a possibility, believing he still has valuable contributions to offer. “Certainly, I believe I can make a meaningful contribution,” he stated.

Amaechi disclosed that he is in discussions with other concerned Nigerians who believe the country is being mismanaged, aiming to form a united front.

“We are thinking that if we come together and win the election, the country will certainly witness change,” he remarked.

He further reiterated his long-held view that “Boko Haram is not a religious crisis. Many of those involved are doing it out of desperation and hunger.”
