In a retaliatory move, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel on Friday, following an unprecedented Israeli assault that struck top Iranian military leaders, nuclear facilities, and bases.
Air raid sirens and explosions were heard across Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautioned the public to expect “several waves of Iranian attacks.”
An AFP journalist later observed smoke rising above skyscrapers in downtown Tel Aviv as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed to have attacked dozens of targets in Israel.
The firefighting service reported several people trapped in a high-rise building in central Israel.

This salvo from Iran came hours after Israel announced its widespread air raids had killed several top Iranian generals, including most of the senior leadership of the Revolutionary Guards’ air force, hitting approximately 200 targets, including nuclear facilities.
As both nations exchanged blows, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a televised address, vowed to bring Israel “to ruin”. He declared, “The armed forces of the Islamic republic will inflict heavy blows upon this malevolent enemy.”
In the wake of the initial Israeli onslaught, US President Donald Trump urged Iran to “make a deal” on its nuclear program, warning of “even more brutal” attacks if it failed to comply.
The United States emphasized its non-involvement in the Israeli action and cautioned Iran against attacking American personnel or interests, but Tehran maintained that Washington would be “responsible for consequences.”
Netanyahu stated that Israel, the Middle East’s sole (though undeclared) nuclear power, struck at the “heart of Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme,” targeting scientists and the main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz.
The Israeli premier added that the strikes would “continue as many days as it takes,” while the military indicated intelligence suggested Iran was nearing the “point of no return” on its nuclear program.
Iranian media reported that the strikes killed Iran’s highest-ranking military officer, armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri, and the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a statement, rejected “calls for Iran to show restraint in the face of Israeli aggression.”
