The Senate has approved several of President Bola Tinubu’s nominees to serve on the boards of various Regional Development Commissions across Nigeria.
Among those confirmed is former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, who will chair the newly created South-South Development Commission (SSDC).
Usoro Offiong Akpabio from Akwa Ibom State was also confirmed as the Managing Director of the SSDC.
Other confirmed members of the SSDC board include Larry Odey (Cross River), Charles Zuofa (Bayelsa), Nkereuwem Ebong (Akwa Ibom), Chika Chinedu (Rivers), Femi Oise (Edo), and Charles Enukhowhate (Delta). Additional appointments were made from other regions, including Tabitha Sallah (North-East), Yusuf Amao (North-Central), and Joseph Mmamal (South-East).
Further appointees include Bukonola Braimoh (South-West), Marcus Eji as Executive Director of Projects (Rivers), Aganaba Steven as Executive Director for Social and Human Capital Development (Bayelsa), Timi Ayibatonye as Executive Director for Corporate Services (Delta), Joseph Ugheoke as Executive Director for Commercial and Environmental Development (Edo), and Ambassador Sony Abang as Executive Director for Finance (Cross River).
The Senate also confirmed Olubunmi Adetunmbi as Chairman of the South-West Development Commission and Cosmas Atighir as Chairman of the North-Central Development Commission.
Additionally, Thompson Oludare was confirmed as Managing Director and Kabir Katata as Executive Director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
However, Tijani Kaura, nominated to represent the North-West in one of the commissions, was not confirmed. According to the Senate Committee, he failed to submit the necessary documentation and did not attend the screening. While he was not formally disqualified, the Committee noted that his nomination could still be considered if he fulfills the required screening procedures.
These confirmations came after a report was presented by Senator Benson Konbowei (PDP – Bayelsa Central), Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-South Development Commission.
