IGP Orders Investigation After Retired Officer Rejected N2m Pension

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation into a viral video in which a retired Superintendent of Police criticized the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners.

In the video, the retired officer, who served for 35 years and retired on October 1, 2023, expressed deep frustration after allegedly being offered a total retirement benefit of ₦2 million.

He claimed the Nigeria Police Pension Board informed him that his total benefits were approved at ₦3 million, which included ₦1 million in arrears and ₦2 million as his final terminal benefit. He reportedly rejected the offer.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP directed the NPF Pensions Limited to urgently investigate the claims, identify any lapses, and take appropriate action.

The IGP emphasized that while efforts have been made to improve the police pension system, feedback like the one in the video is crucial for identifying gaps and initiating reforms.

“The IGP has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations raised in a viral video by a retired Superintendent of Police concerning the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners. The IGP has tasked the NPF Pensions Limited to urgently examine the claims, identify any possible lapses, and ensure that appropriate action is taken to address the concerns raised,” the statement read.

Egbetokun assured both serving and retired officers that their welfare is a priority and that a timely and adequate pension system is vital for morale and institutional integrity.

He urged stakeholders to remain calm and patient while the NPF Pensions conducts its investigation and collaborates with relevant agencies to find lasting solutions.
