Kylian Mbappé Sues PSG

Kylian Mbappé has filed a legal complaint against his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), accusing them of moral harassment, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Thursday.

The new Real Madrid star is currently in a dispute with PSG, claiming the club owes him €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages.

Mbappé is also challenging his treatment during the lead-up to the 2023-24 season, when he was sidelined from the main squad following his decision not to extend his contract.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Mbappé is “denouncing the ‘lofting’ he claimed to have been subjected to at Paris Saint-Germain.”

In France, “lofting” is a term used to describe the practice of isolating a player from the main team for various reasons, including sporting or disciplinary issues.

Mbappé joined Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer after a seven-year stint at PSG, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 256 goals.

His departure was marked by significant tension; some fans even booed him during his final home game. PSG felt betrayed after offering him the most lucrative contract in its history in 2022.

However, Mbappé was reportedly frustrated, believing the club had not fulfilled promises to sign key players.

He was also allegedly annoyed that the contract, presented with a “2025” jersey, was in fact only until 2024, with a player’s option for an additional year.

The dispute escalated in June 2023 when Mbappé informed PSG he would not activate his option for the extra year. This put the club in a difficult position, as his contract was in its final year, meaning they risked losing him for free.

During the preseason tour in Japan and South Korea, Mbappé was left out of the squad and forced to train with fringe players. PSG’s position was that they would rather sell him than lose him for free, but he rejected a reported €300 million transfer to Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Following talks, Mbappé was eventually reinstated to the lineup after being left out of the season’s opening league game.

In April, Mbappé’s legal team announced they would take action against PSG for harassment based on his treatment during this period.
