LP Senator, Rep Member Defect To APC

The Labour Party (LP) has lost two more federal lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), intensifying political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the defection of Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents the Edo South Senatorial District.

In a letter to the Senate, Imasuen cited extensive consultations with his constituents and supporters who wanted him to join a party with national prominence and relevance.

He stated his desire to align his district with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, also pointed to “irreconcilable internal crises and leadership challenges” within the Labour Party as a key reason for his defection, claiming the turmoil hindered his ability to effectively represent his constituents.

Senate President Akpabio commented that the move was “very important for the benefit and peace of this country.”

Similarly, Chimaobi Atu, who represents the Enugu North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also switched from the Labour Party to the APC.

His defection was announced by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary.

Like Imasuen, Atu cited prolonged internal wrangling within the LP as a factor that negatively affected his legislative duties.

The defection, however, was met with protest from Minority Whip Ali Isa, who called on the Speaker to declare Atu’s seat vacant. Speaker Abbas acknowledged the point of order but did not make a ruling.

These defections follow a recent trend, as just days earlier, two other lawmakers—Peter Akpanke (PDP to APC) and Paul Nnamchi (LP to APC)—also joined the ruling party. Additionally, Joseph Nwobashi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) formally joined the APC.
