Tinubu Appoints Grace Morenike As First Female Chairman Of Nigerian Legion

The Presidency has announced the landmark appointment of Ms. Grace Morenike Henry as the new Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion.

This historic decision, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and effective June 7, 2025, makes Ms. Henry the first woman and the first non-commissioned officer to lead the country’s main veterans’ organization.

According to a statement released by the Legion’s spokesperson, Abdul Lauya, on Thursday, the appointment was confirmed in a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

Ms. Henry, born on October 5, 1964, has a distinguished service record of over 25 years, having retired from the Nigerian Army in 2000.

Before this appointment, she served as the Director of Corporate Affairs at the Legion Headquarters in Abuja and is also the National Coordinator of Female Military Veterans of Nigeria.

Her appointment, which succeeds Maj. Gen. AbdulMalik Jibrin (rtd), is seen as a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity within the veterans’ community.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in her leadership, urging her to use her extensive experience to reform and revitalize the Nigerian Legion, which serves as a vital support system for the nation’s ex-servicemen and women.

Lauya stated that her leadership signals a new era of reform and revitalization for the Legion, especially amid growing calls for improved veteran welfare.

The Nigerian Legion is a statutory body dedicated to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their dependents.

Its primary functions include providing support for veterans’ rehabilitation, reintegration, and economic empowerment; promoting patriotism through events like the Armed Forces Remembrance Day; and collaborating with government and security agencies to uphold the dignity of retired service personnel.

The organization also engages in security-related services, advocacy, and public enlightenment to highlight the contributions of veterans to national development.
