Akwa Ibom APC Ward Chairman Killed In Party Clash

Mr. John Monday Marcus, the Ward 2 chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ukanafun local government area of Akwa Ibom State, has been killed in a violent clash with a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The clash reportedly occurred after a group of PDP members refused to follow Governor Umo Eno in his recent defection to the APC.

According to LEADERSHIP, a local politician who had recently joined the APC donated money to his new party as a gesture of appreciation to grassroots leaders from both political parties.

However, the deceased APC Ward chairman allegedly “hijacked the cash,” infuriating the PDP members who then attacked him with clubs and broken bottles.

An eyewitness, Mfon Akpan, recalled that “even some APC members were annoyed by his action and descended on him, smashing his head with broken bottles, leading to a free-for-all fight at the venue of the meeting.”

He added, “The action of the deceased infuriated the APC faithful who descended on him and smashed his head with bottle and he died on the spot. His remains have been deposited in the mortuary.”

Following Governor Eno’s defection, it is understood that he now controls the affairs of both the PDP and APC in the state to maintain party structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

The deceased’s family and party members have expressed shock and grief. The Ukanafun LGA APC chapter publicity secretary, Hon. Stanley Sunday Peter, released a statement describing Marcus as a “committed party loyalist” known for his “unwavering dedication to the growth and unity of the APC.” The statement noted that his death was a “painful reminder of the fragility of life.”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident and assured the public that an investigation is ongoing to find and prosecute the perpetrators. “Yes, we are aware of the incident and investigation is ongoing to bring perpetrators of the crime to book,” she confirmed.
