Why PDP Cannot Hold Successful National Convention – Saraki

Dr. Bukola Saraki, the former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Reconciliation Committee, has stated that the party cannot hold a successful national convention or a proper National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting until it resolves the ongoing controversy surrounding the office of its national secretary.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Friday night, Saraki identified the unresolved conflict over the national secretary position as a major obstacle to the party’s internal unity.

He stressed that a validly convened NEC meeting—which is crucial for determining the party’s direction—cannot take place until this issue is settled.

“This is a problem that has existed. Before we can have a smooth convention, we must first hold a NEC meeting, and before that, we need to agree on who our secretary is,” Saraki said, adding that the issue has “lingered for ages and didn’t start today, but now, we must face it head-on.”

He expressed frustration that the crisis has persisted despite a Supreme Court ruling on March 21, 2025, which affirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic national secretary.

He attributed the ongoing dispute to “entrenched positions among some party members.”

Saraki also revealed that a recent meeting between the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) helped clarify the matter.

He stated that “Nine out of 10 of us at that meeting accepted INEC’s position that as far as it is concerned, the secretary of the party remains Sam Anyanwu.”

Dismissing suggestions that the confusion is politically motivated, Saraki emphasized that the party must now prioritize unity over factional interests.

“The world is watching. We have said there is no personal interest here. We are guided only by what is acceptable under the law,” he concluded.
