Court Grants Natasha Bail On FG’s Fresh Charge

The Federal Government has filed a fresh six-count charge against the suspended Senator for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, at the Federal High Court.

The charges, marked CR/297/25, allege that the lawmaker, who is currently serving a six-month Senate suspension, made a false assassination claim.

She is accused of telling her supporters in Kogi state and during a live broadcast on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025, that certain politicians were plotting to assassinate her.

The charges specifically name Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello, alleging that she claimed they participated in a meeting where a plot to eliminate her was hatched in a way that would appear as a mob action.

The federal government accuses her of making a false imputation that she knew would harm their reputations, which is an offense punishable under Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrime Act.

During the arraignment before Justice Muhammed Umar, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, did not challenge her bail, but urged the court to impose conditions to ensure her presence for trial.

Her counsel, Prof. Roland Otaru, SAN, who had filed a bail application on June 20, assured the court that his client would not be a flight risk, noting that she represents a constituency with five Local Government Areas and had previously been granted bail in a similar charge by an Abuja High Court.

After hearing both sides, Justice Umar decided to grant the Senator bail on self-recognition, noting that she is a serving senator and the charges are bailable offenses.

The case has been adjourned until September 22 for hearing.
