The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced an expanded caucus meeting at its National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, despite an earlier police presence that prevented access to the venue.
This expanded caucus meeting follows a closed-door gathering of governors elected on the PDP platform at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
Attendees at the governors’ meeting included Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Speaking to journalists, Governor Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, addressed the earlier police presence, describing the blockade as necessary to “prevent miscreants” from hijacking the meeting.

Earlier in the day, the party had relocated its Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting from Wadata Plaza to the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja’s Central Business District, citing security concerns.
The PDP announced this change on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating: “The Meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier scheduled to hold by 10am at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja has been moved to Yar’Adua Centre, Central Business District, Abuja.”
PDP officials criticized the police deployment to Wadata Plaza as an act of harassment, with several BoT members, including Maina Chiroma and Bode George, reportedly denied access.
A former national secretary of the PDP, Umar Tsauri, told Channels Television that the police claimed to be acting on an “order from above.”
However, the FCT Police Command denied sealing off the secretariat.5 In a statement, spokesperson Josephine Adeh said officers were only deployed to maintain law and order, asserting, “At no time was the Secretariat sealed off by the Police.”
These events on Monday unfold amidst the PDP’s ongoing internal crisis, particularly concerning party leadership and the contentious position of National Secretary.
Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum had last week announced a postponement of the PDP’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, a move rejected by the National Working Committee (NWC), which insisted the meeting would proceed as scheduled on June 30, 2025, arguing that only the NEC has the power to postpone such gatherings.
The dispute over the National Secretary position, claimed by both Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, remains a major point of contention.
Damagum’s announcement last week of Anyanwu’s reinstatement was also opposed by the NWC.
This leadership tussle has resulted in multiple legal battles, with both factions interpreting a March Supreme Court judgment in their favor.
Another suit regarding the authentic National Secretary is scheduled for hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 22, 2025.
