PDP Moves BoT Meeting To New Venue After Police Siege

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday moved its Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting from Wadata Plaza, the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, to the Yar’Adua Centre in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The Meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier scheduled to hold by 10am at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja has been moved to Yar’Adua Centre, Central Business District, Abuja,” the PDP announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The party criticized the takeover of its secretariat by armed policemen from the FCT Police Command, describing the actions of the police, who barred BoT members like Maina Chiroma from accessing the secretariat, as “harassment.”

A former National Secretary of the PDP, Umar Tsauri, told Channels Television that the police claimed to be acting on an “order from above.”

Displeased BoT members later left the secretariat amid ongoing tension surrounding the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, also scheduled for Monday.

Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command, through its spokesperson Josephine Adeh, stated that officers were deployed solely “to maintain law and order and ensure public safety in line with their constitutional mandate. At no time was the Secretariat sealed off by the Police.”

The PDP has been mired in a years-long internal crisis, leading to frequent postponements of its NEC meeting. The most recent postponement prompted the party’s leadership to meet with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Although the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, announced the postponement of the NEC meeting last week, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP insisted that the party’s 100th NEC meeting would proceed as scheduled on Monday, June 30, 2025, arguing that only the NEC could make such a decision.

A major point of contention within the party is the National Secretary position, with both Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye laying claim to it.

Damagum’s recent declaration of Anyanwu’s reinstatement as National Secretary was disputed by the NWC.

This dispute has been the subject of multiple court cases, including a Supreme Court judgment in March interpreted differently by both sides, and a Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed September 22, 2025, for a hearing in another suit concerning the authentic National Secretary.
