Supreme Court Reserves Ruling On Edo Governorship Dispute Indefinitely

The Supreme Court has indefinitely reserved its judgment in the legal dispute concerning the Edo State Governorship Election Petition.

The apex court adjourned the judgment “sine die” (without a definite date) after hearing arguments for and against the election that affirmed Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected governor.

Justice Garba Lawal, who presided over the hearing of the appeal filed by Mr. Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that the date for the judgment delivery would be communicated to the parties involved.

Ighodalo, whose appeal was presented by his counsel, Ken Mozia SAN, urged the Supreme Court to remove Okpebholo from office and declare him the winner of the election, asserting that he scored the majority of lawful votes.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi SAN, requested the court to dismiss the appeal entirely.

Agabi argued that Ighodalo and the PDP had previously invalidated and deemed the election unlawful due to alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

He contended that having declared the election illegal, Ighodalo and the PDP could not then ask the court to declare them winners of an “illegality.”

INEC accused Ighodalo and the PDP of inconsistency in their grievances against the election and pleaded for their case to be dismissed for lack of merit.
