The Zamfara State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Hon. Bashar Gummi, has strongly criticized Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration for the alleged “misappropriation of public funds.”
During a parallel plenary session held on Thursday in Gusau, lawmakers raised several concerns, including the N9 billion allocated for the renovation of the Yariman Bakura Teaching Hospital.
They questioned how a facility initially built and completed for approximately N1 billion by previous administrations could cost nine times that amount for mere renovation.
The legislators also demanded accountability for N200 billion received by the state government from the Federal Government’s oil subsidy removal palliatives, which reportedly involved N20 billion disbursed monthly to states for ten months.

Furthermore, they raised eyebrows over the management of N49 billion from the NG-CARES program, intended to empower 250 youths in each of the state’s 147 wards, particularly those displaced by banditry.
This N49 billion was released after the immediate past governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, paid a N2.6 billion counter-fund before leaving office in 2023.
Consequently, the Assembly has given the executive branch two weeks to provide a comprehensive explanation for these financial dealings, threatening impeachment proceedings if the government fails to comply.
During the session, lawmakers also expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Zamfara State, urging the governor to implement immediate and deliberate measures to halt the violence.

Hon. Aliyu Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South, lamented that the governor seemed to have lost control of the security situation.
He highlighted the perilous condition of the Gusau/Maru/Talata Mafara road, describing it as “suicidal to follow,” and criticized the government’s apparent lack of sympathy for victims.
Kagara revealed a recent incident where criminals collected N17 million in ransom from the people of Morai but failed to release the captives, with the state government remaining silent.
While supporting the establishment of the Community Protection Guards, members noted with dismay that guards were being killed daily without apparent concern from the administration.
Adding to the legislative demands, Hon. Nasiru Maru (Maru North) called for the implementation of free education and scholarships for qualified Zamfara indigenes.
The session culminated with Hon. Ibrahim Tudu Tukur (Bakura constituency) proposing a “vote of no confidence” against Governor Dauda Lawal, accusing him of betraying the state by failing to secure lives and property, fostering disunity, and attempting to undermine Islamic tenets, specifically by targeting the Ulama Council.
