The Nigerian Federal Government has conveyed its “concern and keen interest” regarding the United States’ recent decision to impose stricter visa restrictions on Nigerian citizens.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government described the new policy as “disproportionate.” It called for “a reconsideration in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.”
The US government had announced a revision to its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigeria, which now limits the validity of certain non-immigrant visas, specifically the B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) categories, to just three months, also restricting them to a single entry.

This development is viewed by the Federal Government with particular apprehension, given the historically “cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties” that exist between Nigeria and the United States.
“The attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria has been drawn to the recent decision by the United States Government to revise its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigerian citizens, limiting the validity of non-immigrant visas, including B1/B2, F and J categories to three months with single entry.
“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries.
“The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations,” said Ebienfa.

The statement indicates that this policy shift will broadly impact Nigerians, particularly students pursuing education in the US, professionals engaged in legitimate business, and families visiting relatives.
The government further stressed that these restrictions could hinder the cultural and educational exchanges that have historically underpinned US-Nigeria relations.
“While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.
“Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to pursuing a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest,” Ebienfa noted.
The ministry further confirmed that diplomatic engagements are currently underway.
It reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to pursuing a resolution that ensures fairness and upholds mutual interests.
