How Adoke Stopped Jonathan From Removing Me As Borno Governor – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed on Thursday in Abuja that he was the “most demonised” individual during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Speaking at the public presentation of Mohammed Adoke’s memoir, ‘OPL 245: Inside Story of the $1.3 billion Nigerian oil block’, Shettima recounted how Jonathan had considered removing him as Borno State governor.

However, the then Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, prevented this, courageously informing Jonathan that he lacked the constitutional authority to remove even an elected councillor, let alone a governor.

Shettima served as governor of Borno, an insurgent-affected state, from May 2011 to May 2019.

During the peak of the insurgency, Jonathan declared states of emergency in parts of Borno and Plateau in December 2011, and later across all of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa in May 2013, but notably did not suspend any governors.

Ironically, on March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu, Shettima’s principal, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to a protracted political crisis.

This declaration resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the House of Assembly for six months.

Tinubu subsequently appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as administrator for the oil-rich state, a decision that has drawn widespread criticism.

In contrast to Adoke’s stance during Jonathan’s era, the current Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has justified the suspension of Fubara and the state’s legislature.
