The immediate past Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has publicly declared his support for a southern candidate to hold the presidency in 2027.
Speaking in Makurdi, Benue State, on Thursday, the former governor stated that, in adherence to the unwritten agreement of rotating the presidency between Nigeria’s North and South, the South should be allowed to complete an eight-year term before power shifts back to the North.

Ortom explicitly stated, “Till today, I, Ortom, believe in the southern presidency. Even if my party (PDP) is producing a candidate for the Presidency in 2027, the candidate must be from the South. South should be allowed to complete eight years. So, for me, I am not supporting a northern candidate.”
This stance aligns with the position taken by Ortom and other former governors, including Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), along with current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
This group, known as the G5, had vehemently opposed the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, insisting that power should return to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year northern presidency.2
