Why I Served Food At Public Event – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has addressed the social media backlash regarding his participation in a recent charity event in Imo State, where he was photographed serving food to underprivileged citizens.

The event, named “Jubilee of Hope” and held last week, sparked online debate, with critics labeling his actions politically motivated, while supporters praised his humility.

In a statement released on Sunday via his X handle, Obi dismissed the controversy, emphasizing that the event’s purpose was not self-promotion but to reignite the spirit of compassion and service in leadership.

“Let me be clear, that event was not about me. It was called the Jubilee of Hope, and its purpose is straightforward — to remind us all that true leadership is service, and that those who have must never forget those who do not,” Obi clarified.

He noted that the event was private, and he had not invited the press or publicized his attendance; rather, photos and videos were shared independently by third parties.

“As expected, the usual naysayers and paid agents went to work trying to twist something sincere into something political,” he added.

Obi explained that the “Jubilee of Hope” aimed to symbolize a society founded on “empathy, equity, and responsibility,” where elites temporarily set aside their privilege to serve the less fortunate.

He highlighted that he was not the only prominent individual serving, mentioning others like Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and former Seplat Chairman Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako.

Reiterating his core values, Obi stated that he has always lived and led with simplicity and humility in both his public and private life.

“I do not have a house help. When guests visit my home, I serve them myself. I live simply, I sweep, I clean, because for me, humility is not a campaign strategy; it is a way of life,” he declared.

The former Anambra State governor further explained that his prolonged presence at the serving station was simply because several attendees specifically requested him to serve them directly.

“I could not ignore them. That was the only reason. Otherwise, there was nothing special about what I did. Service is not special — it is expected,” Obi noted.

Finally, Obi called for a cultural transformation among Nigerian elites, urging public office holders, business leaders, and ordinary citizens to embrace a lifestyle of service and compassion.

“We cannot speak of building a New Nigeria while ignoring the hungry, the forgotten, and the poor. Events like this must not remain symbolic, they must become cultural. Let us work together to build a country where hope is not seasonal, and dignity is not a privilege, but a right. A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
