Cameroon’s 92-Year-Old President Biya Declares Bid For Eighth Term

Cameroonian President Paul Biya, aged 92, announced on Sunday his intention to seek an eighth term in the upcoming October 12, 2025 presidential elections, aiming to extend his nearly 43 years in power.

Biya made the declaration on X (formerly Twitter) in both French and English, stating, “I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the serious challenges facing us. Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is still to come.”

As the leader of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), Biya was already the party’s de facto candidate.

Despite his announcement, several long-time supporters have recently distanced themselves from him, with two prominent figures defecting from his camp in recent weeks.

However, Cameroon’s opposition remains deeply fragmented and is struggling to unite behind a single candidate to challenge his extensive rule.
