Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has shared insights from his post-retirement conversations with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, including their discussion about President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy.
Radda spoke to reporters in Daura during the former president’s burial ceremony, noting that Buhari passed away in the United Kingdom on Sunday at the age of 82.
Governor Radda explained that after Buhari left office in 2023 and retired to Daura, Katsina State, he had more frequent interactions with him, benefiting from his leadership guidance and patriotism.

“After he left office in 2023, he spent about two years in Daura, Katsina. In that period, I was fortunate to interact with him more frequently, discussing national issues. He was a jovial person who often made me laugh,” Radda recalled.
He noted that their discussions often revolved around the challenges faced by Nigerians and the importance of patriotism.
“He always told me that ‘Your Excellency, go and do your best and be honest as a leader. You cannot satisfy Nigerians; only God can do that.’ He said he suffered a lot, but now he sees himself as a free man with a sense of relief,” Radda quoted Buhari.
Radda specifically recounted Buhari’s reaction to the fuel subsidy removal: “Let me use his words: ‘I pity Bola (President Tinubu) for what he is doing. He is a brave man for removing the fuel subsidy. When I was president, whenever I made an attempt to remove the subsidy, a lot of people would give me too many reasons not to do so. But Bola did it immediately. If he had consulted people, he could not have removed the fuel subsidy now,’” Governor Radda quoted.
Governor Radda described this as one of their most memorable discussions, adding that Buhari’s death has created a difficult-to-fill vacuum in Katsina State.
President Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy on May 29, 2023, the same day he assumed office, citing the need to grow the economy and promote national development due to decades of economic stagnation and misalignments.
