Former Super Eagles Coach Monday Sinclair Dies At 88

Monday Sinclair, former interim head coach of the Super Eagles and a respected figure in Nigerian football, has passed away at the age of 88.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peterside Idah, who regarded Sinclair as a mentor from their time together at Sharks FC.

Peterside Idah shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, recounting how Sinclair signed him to Sharks FC and gave him his first professional match.

He fondly remembered Sinclair’s initial reaction to seeing him: “My friend, are you a boxer?” due to his build, leading to a close bond.

Sinclair, who played for the Green Eagles in the 1960s, was widely recognized for his exceptional talent scouting and significant contributions to Nigerian football development.

His coaching career spanned several clubs, including the defunct Sharks FC of Rivers State, Niger Tornadoes, Enugu Rangers, and Bayelsa United.

He briefly served as the Super Eagles’ interim coach in 1997 and later coached the Equatorial Guinea national team.

Monday Sinclair is credited with mentoring numerous iconic Nigerian footballers, including Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah himself.

His profound influence at the grassroots level leaves a lasting legacy on the sport in Nigeria. His passing follows closely on the heels of another football legend, Peter Rufai, who recently succumbed to a long-term illness.
