How Buhari Treated Me During His Presidency – Personal Photographer

Bayo Omoboriowo, who served as the personal photographer to then-President Muhammadu Buhari for his entire two terms (2015-2023), has lauded the late leader for his kindness and the “wings to fly” he provided during his time in office.

Buhari passed away on Sunday at 82 in a London hospital and was buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

In a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday, Omoboriowo recounted his eight-year experience, stating that he served Buhari out of a belief in Nigeria and a desire to document the nation’s history through his lens.

He emphasized the extraordinary trust Buhari placed in him, noting, “Never once did he interfere in my work. Never once did he ask to see or edit the photos I took. He gave me the space, the trust, and the freedom to express myself through my lens. That kind of trust is rare. That kind of support is deep.”

In a poignant gesture of honor, Omoboriowo revealed that he flew to London specifically to document Buhari’s final hours. “I had to document this moment—his final bow—not just for history, but for honour,” he stated.

Accompanying his tribute, Omoboriowo shared photographs of Buhari during his last moments in London and his burial in Nigeria.

He concluded his post with a “heart full of gratitude, pain, pride, and deep respect,” adding, “He may be gone, but he is not forgotten.2 His legacy, in many ways, lives in the stories we tell—and the ones we preserve.”

He concluded with a prayer for the peaceful repose of the former leader’s soul.
