President Bola Tinubu stated on Sunday that his success in the 2023 presidential election was crucial, asserting that Nigeria’s history “would not have been completed carefully and richly” had he lost.
He made this remark in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, during the 8th Day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Tinubu delivered a heartfelt tribute to Oba Adetona, acknowledging the monarch’s pivotal role in his political journey and the 2023 election triumph.
He recounted, “I came to him, he blessed me. He said ‘you will win that election and you will win one more time. Go ahead.’ Today, he is no more. He is gone.”

The President lauded the late monarch for his wisdom, steadfastness, resoluteness, and encouragement, particularly concerning the June 12 struggle and the return to democracy.
He also extended thanks to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, whom he affectionately referred to as “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State,” for his contributions before, during, and after the burial rites.
Governor Abiodun, in turn, urged the people of Ijebuland to remain united and uphold the values of peace and harmony championed by the late Awujale.
He called on residents to be law-abiding and to honor the monarch’s legacy through actions reflecting integrity, dignity, and selfless leadership.
In a brief sermon, the Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Kamaldeen Bello, reminded attendees of the inevitability of death, emphasizing that it teaches humanity the essence of life.
He urged, “We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last.”
Prominent dignitaries present at the prayers included the Governors of Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti States, as well as the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Lagos States, and various ministers.
