Names Of Popular Senators Backing Creation Of Anioma State

The movement to create Anioma State as the sixth state in Nigeria’s Southeast region has garnered significant support, with no fewer than ninety Senators in the upper legislative chamber endorsing the proposal.

Key figures backing the creation of the new state include the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and the Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, along with 88 other Senators.

This widespread support is largely due to intense lobbying efforts by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North senatorial district on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is a prominent champion of the Anioma State movement.

On May 27, 2025, Senator Nwoko sent a letter to the Senate President and all Senators, appealing for their individual and collective support.

In his letter, he based the proposal on the principles of national development, equity, justice, and federal balance.

The initiative is formally designated as Senate Bill 481 and is currently under legislative consideration as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

With 90 Senators already signed on, political and legislative experts confirm that the motion has surpassed the constitutional requirement of a two-thirds majority support in the Senate, which stands at 67 Senators.

As the list of supporters is expected to grow, the push for Anioma State is gaining traction as a unifying cause with strong prospects for legislative success and national approval.

Among the top-ranking lawmakers who have publicly supported the Anioma State initiative are:

  • Senator Barau Jibrin (Deputy Senate President)
  • Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Senate Leader)
  • Senator Abba Patrick Moro (Senate Minority Leader)
  • Senator Adams Oshiomhole (former Governor of Edo State)
  • Senator Seriake Dickson (former Governor of Bayelsa State)
  • Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (former Governor of Abia State)
  • Senator Victor Umeh (Southeast political stalwart)
  • Senator Gbenga Daniel (former Governor of Ogun State)
  • Senator Ireti Kingibe (representing the Federal Capital Territory – FCT)
  • Senator Simon Lalong (former Governor of Plateau State)
  • Senator Tony Nwoye (representing Anambra North)

This legislative groundswell highlights a remarkable show of solidarity in the Senate, where the endorsement by 90 Senators clearly demonstrates that the constitutional threshold for state creation has been met and exceeded in the Red Chamber.
