Paul Ohonbamu, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, has claimed that the recent visit of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the state resulted in a stampede that caused three deaths.
Ohonbamu made this assertion during an interview with Channels TV today, July 21, though he did not specify the exact location within the state where the alleged stampede occurred.
“Yes, intelligent report brought it out. Two died in the hospital. They rushed them actually,” Ohonbamu stated.
He added, “Many of these things, we do not alarm the public with some of these things. You know that anywhere Obi enters, there is this euphoria. People do not know him deeply, they just see him and then say ‘This is Obi, the messiah they want and they rush after him. That euphoria, the ecstasy can cause stampede but it did not reflect in votes.”

When questioned if the stampede happened at the school of nursing Obi had visited, the Commissioner responded that Obi “went to other places” besides the school. When pressed for the date of the incident, Ohonbamu specified July 7.
Regarding the location, he said, “In Benin, they took some of them to the hospital. I did not follow Peter Obi to where he followed but I know that is where it happened. I was supposed to address the press on it but they said do not panic the public. Peter Obi knows all this.”
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo first made the allegation in a viral video that Peter Obi last visit to Edo caused death of three persons.
Okpebholo also threatened Obi not to visit Edo again without his permission.
The threat has since caused backlash on Okpebholo from many Nigerians.
