Tinubu Approves Tenure Extension For Customs CG

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Originally set to expire on August 31, 2025, Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026.

According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, this extension aims to allow Adeniyi to “consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives of the Tinubu administration.”

These initiatives include the modernization of the Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

The statement noted that “President Tinubu recognizes Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that “this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

Tinubu initially appointed Adeniyi as the acting CG in June 2023, succeeding former CG Hameed Ali, before confirming his appointment in October of the same year.
