The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has publicly disowned a viral list of 151 secondary schools whose candidates’ results for the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) were allegedly withheld.
The list, which was circulating online, claimed to be an “Urgent notice” from a WAEC director and instructed school principals to appear at the Lagos Zonal Office with exam scripts.
WAEC, however, declared the list to be fake on its official social media handle on Tuesday.
In a statement, the council told the public to “ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled,” adding that it would never ask a school to bring candidates’ scripts to its office.
The council also advised the public to only trust messages from its official handles and accredited media.
This clarification comes after WAEC’s Monday announcement of the 2025 WASSCE results, where 192,089 candidates’ results, representing 9.75% of the total, were withheld due to various forms of examination malpractice.
The Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, revealed that only 38.32% of candidates who sat for the exam obtained credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
This figure represents a significant 33.8% decline from the 72.12% pass rate recorded in 2024, which Dangut attributed to the newly implemented anti-malpractice measures.
