Benue Assembly Rejects Alia’s Request To Screen Commissioner Nominees, Make Demands

The Benue State House of Assembly has rejected Governor Hyacinth Alia’s request for the screening and confirmation of commissioner nominees, citing unresolved issues and the governor’s alleged disrespect for the legislature.

During Friday’s plenary, the House passed a motion to return the governor’s letter. Lawmakers, including Shimapever Jiji and Thomas Dugeri, stated that Governor Alia had consistently failed to honor the Assembly’s resolutions and had shown “total disregard” for the legislature.

Dugeri was quoted as saying, “The governor has no respect for this hallowed chamber.”

While lawmakers clarified that their decision was not meant to stall governance, they insisted that they would not screen the nominees until the governor meets their demands.

These demands include:

  • The immediate provision of official vehicles to affected members.
  • The enforcement of suspension notices against the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, and the executive secretary of the Benue State Sports Lottery and Marketing Board.

The House resolved that it would not entertain any further correspondence from the executive arm until the governor complies with these conditions.
