The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rain across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning that several regions face a high risk of flooding.
Regional Breakdown of the Forecast
- Northern Region: Morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected from Monday to Wednesday, particularly in states like Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, and Jigawa. NiMet warned of a high possibility of flooding in Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.
- Central Region: The forecast predicts light rain in the mornings for parts of Niger, Kwara, and Kogi states. Later in the day, thunderstorms and light rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, and Benue. A high possibility of flooding is also expected in parts of Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger states.
- Southern Region: Cloudy skies with intermittent light rains are expected in the mornings for states like Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Moderate rains are predicted for parts of Enugu, Edo, Osun, and Rivers later in the day, with continuous rain expected over the entire region from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. The agency warned of a high likelihood of floods in parts of Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
Public and Aviation Advisory
NiMet also issued several safety tips to the public, advising residents to avoid driving during heavy rain and for states with a flood risk to activate their emergency response systems immediately.
The agency also advised farmers to avoid applying fertilizer and pesticides right before the rains to prevent the leaching of nutrients.
Furthermore, it recommended that vulnerable persons wear warm clothing due to low night-time temperatures.
The agency also urged airline operators to obtain specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.
