Confusion As Tinubu Reappoints, Sacks Federal Character Commission Chairman Within Few Hours

President Bola Tinubu made and then reversed a major appointment within hours, first reappointing Muheeba Dankaka as chairperson of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) before replacing her with former lawmaker Ayo Hulayat Omidiran.

The initial announcement of Dankaka’s reappointment was made at 6:35 p.m. on Monday, only to be followed by a new statement at 10:44 p.m. “superseding the earlier one.”

This rapid flip-flop caused confusion, with some individuals, including the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, publicly congratulating Dankaka on her “excellent performance” even after her appointment had been withdrawn.

The reversal brought an end to Dankaka’s tenure, which had been “marred by controversy,” and saw the new list of appointees remain largely unchanged except for the new chairperson.

This episode has been cited as an example of a “growing list of appointment blunders” under the Tinubu administration, with critics pointing to what they see as “avoidable sloppiness in official communications” and a recurring theme of “appointment disarray” within the Presidency.
