Veteran Actor Chief Kanran Dies At 69

Veteran actor Olusegun “Chief Kanran” Akinremi has passed away at the age of 69.

Film producer Seun Oloketuyi confirmed the news on his Instagram page on Friday, stating that “Popular actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died on Friday morning.”

The BBC also reported that the actor’s daughter confirmed his death, telling the BBC, “It’s true, they killed him. They just confirmed to us that he is dead.”

Chief Kanran rose to fame for portraying wealthy characters and was a versatile “crossover actor.”

He began his acting career as a child, performing in theatre productions during festive seasons.

He later studied at the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University, earning a diploma in directing, acting, and film production.

The actor credited Iya Rainbow’s late husband, Ayanfemi Phillips, as his “gateway into the movie industry.”

After hosting a television program on MTV, he moved into full-time filmmaking, appearing in several Yoruba-language films, including “Ewe Orun,” “Aiye,” and “Swallow.”

He also featured in TV soaps like the now-defunct “Megafortune” and “Mirror in the Sun,” marking his transition from stage to television.

A devoted member of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Chief Kanran celebrated 50 years in the acting profession in 2015.
