Lagos Declares Wednesday Public Holiday
The Lagos State Government has announced that Wednesday, August 20, 2025, will be a public holiday for all public servants in the state in observance of Isese Day.
The holiday was declared in a circular issued by the State’s Head of Service, Bode Agoro, and addressed to top government officials.
The circular noted that the declaration was part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to promoting indigenous culture and heritage.
The circular read, “In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional Institutions in the State, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as Work-Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day.”
The circular added that normal work activities would resume on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.
Oyo Declares Wednesday Work-Free For Isese festival
The Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday for the celebration of Isese Day.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo.
Adeyemo noted that the governor approved the work-free day to allow traditional religion worshippers and other residents to observe the occasion. Governor Makinde urged residents to use the day for reflection and prayers.
The statement said, “His Excellency has therefore requested that the occasion be used to pray for the peace, unity and stability of the state in particular and the country in general.”
The government also called for the governor’s approval to be given “the widest publicity it deserves” to ensure residents and civil servants are fully informed.
Ogun Government Declares Wednesday Public Holiday
The Ogun State government has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate the annual Isese Day celebration. The holiday is in accordance with a law signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2023.
In a statement on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said the day was set aside to celebrate Yoruba culture, religion, and traditions.
He explained that the holiday was introduced to give adherents of the Yoruba religion an opportunity to honor their ancestors.
Akinmade said, “Isese Day is to afford adherents of the Yoruba religion, the needed opportunity to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs.”
He added that the celebration fosters a sense of community and invites the broader society to appreciate the “rich cultural tapestry that the Yoruba tradition contributes to Nigeria.”
