NCAA Bans Airplane Mode, Orders Phones Off During Take-Off, Landing

The Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, has announced new measures to address passenger behavior, including a ban on “flight mode” for mobile phones.

During a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, Najomo declared that all passengers must now “completely switch off” their electronic devices during the “critical phase of flight,” which includes takeoff and landing.

He emphasized, “There’s nothing like anything like flight mode any longer. Must be switched off.”

Nigerian airlines are now required to update their operation manuals to reflect this new rule.

Najomo warned that the era of “business as usual” is over and that the Authority is committed to “enforcing stricter compliance by both airlines and passengers.”

He announced that the NCAA would conduct public awareness campaigns using “radio jingles” and “TV series” to inform travelers of their responsibilities.

He also warned unruly passengers, stating, “If you’re unruly, you’re unruly,” and added, “we’re waiting for you.”

Najomo emphasized the need for “a decisive, united, and accountable response” to threats in the aviation sector.

He stated that the NCAA would compel airlines to provide “adequate training of conflict resolutions” for their staff.

To test the readiness of security protocols, he also announced that the NCAA would conduct “a mock response” exercise in both Lagos and Abuja next week.

In a related statement, Michael Achimugu, the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, noted that “unruly acts can never be eliminated totally,” but that authorities must be ready to manage them “professionally and responsibly.”

Achimugu also noted that in Nigeria, “unruly behaviour is treated with extreme prejudice” and that passengers should always direct their complaints through the NCAA, as “This is the reason the Authority exist; to protect passengers right.”
