New details have emerged on the official earnings of Nigeria’s top political office holders, based on data from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and other government sources.
The figures highlight that the total compensation packages for these officials are significantly higher than their basic salaries.
President and Vice President
Nigeria’s President, Senator Bola Tinubu, receives a monthly basic salary of ₦1,405,882, with his annual salary reaching ₦106,870,584 when consolidated allowances are included. The RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Bello, justified the planned pay increase for public officials by stating, “You pay the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria N1.5 million a month, with a population of over 200 million people.” He also argued, “You cannot pay a minister less than N1 million per month since 2008 and expect him to put his best; he won’t be involved in other things.” The report notes that the RMAFC declined to provide more detailed information on regular payments to the President, Vice President, and their aides. The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, earns a slightly lower monthly package of ₦1,212,629, for an annual salary of ₦14,551,548.
Legislators
The RMAFC chairman revealed that each senator collects a monthly salary and allowances of ₦1,063,860. While their basic salary is less than ₦1 million monthly after deductions, the article estimates that allowances and running costs can push their total compensation to about ₦21 million monthly, with their annual package averaging ₦12.77 million or more. In the House of Representatives, the Speaker’s annual basic salary is about ₦2.48 million, but allowances raise the total annual package to about ₦18.33 million. Former Speaker Yakubu Dogara once disclosed that total allowances for the office could be as high as ₦25 million monthly.
Governors and Judiciary
State governors have a basic monthly salary of ₦185,308, which amounts to ₦2,223,705 annually. When allowances are included, their total annual package rises to about ₦11,540,896. Deputy governors receive an annual basic salary of about ₦2,112,215, with allowances bringing their total package to about ₦10,772,296.
In the judiciary, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is the highest-paid, with a monthly salary of ₦1,346,589. Justices of the Supreme Court and the President of the Court of Appeal earn ₦990,844 monthly, while Justices of the Court of Appeal and Chief Judges of Federal and State High Courts earn ₦798,172.07 monthly. A Judge of the Federal High Court and a Judge of State/FCT High Courts each receive a basic monthly salary of about ₦776,038.22, exclusive of various allowances. The RMAFC has stated that these allowances are designed to cover “operational costs required by public office holders to perform their constitutional duties effectively.”
