A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to “eight years in prison” for “embezzlement.”
The conviction comes months after he became “notorious over leaked sex tapes with other officials’ wives.”
The “Bioko provincial tribunal” found Engonga guilty of “diverting money claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use,” according to Hilario Mitogo, the supreme court press director.
Engonga, the married “former head of the national financial investigation agency,” and five other senior officials were accused of embezzling “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Engonga, nicknamed “Bello,” made “world headlines in November” when the sex tapes, some of which were “filmed in his office at the finance ministry,” were posted on social media while he was in detention for the embezzlement case.
The clips led to a number of “online parodies, including songs and dances and posts about a spoof virility drug dubbed ‘Balthazariem’.”
Mitogo stated that the court also handed Engonga “a fine worth $220,000.”
