Imo Governor Approves N104,000 Minimum Wage For Workers

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants, a significant increase from the previous N76,000.

The announcement was made during a meeting with labor union leaders on Tuesday night at the Government House in Owerri.

The “News Agency of Nigeria reports that the minimum wage was increased from N76,000 to N104,000.”

In addition to this, the minimum wage for doctors was raised from N215,000 to N503,000, and for teachers in tertiary institutions, it was increased from N119,000 to N222,000.

Governor Uzodimma stated that his government has “always put it behind our mind that there is no way any government will do well if it doesn’t have a friendly and cordial relationship with the organised labour.”

He believes that “When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows.” He also sees this as a way of “investing in Imo people.”

Uzodimma also noted that the state’s “Internally Generated Revenue had grown from N400 million to over N3 billion monthly” and that its monthly allocations have increased from “N5 billion to N7 billion” in 2020 to N14 billion now.

He also mentioned that the state’s debt profile has been reduced from over N280 billion to less than N100 billion.

Uzodimma acknowledged the numerous challenges the state has faced, including insecurity and the economic hardships caused by recent reform policies, such as the fuel subsidy removal.

He said, “It is a thing of joy that we have started seeing the dividends of that bold decision of President Bola Tinubu to remove fuel subsidy.”

He also said that the state government will “begin payment of the last batch of gratuity of N16 billion owed to pensioners in the state” on August 27.

In response, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, called the wage increase “a victory for the entire work force in the state.”

He stated that Uzodimma “not only rescued the workers from the economic challenges, but had made the state one of the highest in payment of minimum wage.”

Mr. Nwigwe also said, “Today, no worker in Imo will say you (Uzodimma) have not been fair to us.”
