Tension erupted at the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island on Wednesday, after a violent clash reportedly left no fewer than two people dead.
Viral videos circulating on social media show disturbing scenes from the incident.
In one clip, a man who appears to have been attacked “with a machete is seen lying motionless on the ground.”

Another video shows a man, identified by witnesses as a “suspect, stripped naked and reportedly lynched by an angry mob.”
The “cause of the unrest has not been officially established,” and eyewitness accounts are conflicting.
Some believe the violence was a “cult-related confrontation,” while others allege it was an “inter-tribal dispute between Yoruba and Igbo traders.”
Following the violence, “shops were hurriedly closed as traders and passersby sought safety.”
As of the time of the report, “security operatives had not yet released an official statement on the incident.”
