The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread “thundery and rainy weather activities” across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
Regional Forecast Breakdown
- Northern Region: On Monday morning, NiMet expects thunderstorms with “moderate rainfall” in parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe. By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are forecast for Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Adamawa, Taraba, and Borno. On Tuesday and Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected to continue across most of the region.
- Central Region: On Monday, light morning rains are likely in Plateau and Niger States, with “thunderstorms with moderate rains” expected in Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, and the FCT by the afternoon and evening. This pattern of light morning rains followed by widespread thunderstorms is expected to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Southern Region: The southern region will experience cloudy skies with a chance of light morning rains in Cross River and Akwa Ibom on Monday. By the afternoon/evening, light rains are anticipated in Abia, Edo, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa. On Tuesday, moderate rains are expected in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, with “moderate rainfall” expected throughout the day on Wednesday.
Safety Precautions
NiMet urged the public to take safety precautions, advising against driving during heavy rain. The agency also recommended that farmers should not apply fertilisers or pesticides just before rain to prevent “nutrient leaching.”
Other safety tips included wearing warm clothing due to “low night-time temperatures,” securing “loose objects” to prevent “wind-related hazards,” and disconnecting “electrical appliances during storms.”
The agency also advised against sheltering under tall trees and urged airline operators to get airport-specific weather reports.
