Mob Burns Woman Alive Over Alleged Blasphemy In Niger

A woman has been “burnt to death” by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, following comments she allegedly made that were considered offensive.

The woman, a restaurant owner named Amaye, reportedly made “blasphemous remarks” after a customer jokingly proposed marriage to her.

According to a statement from the Niger State Police Command, the incident occurred on August 30, 2025.

The woman was initially handed over to the District Head and then to “security operatives,” but the mob “overwhelmed the security operatives and lynched her, setting her ablaze.”

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident and commenced a probe.

In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said that while “normalcy has since been restored” to the area, the police “strongly condemned the act of jungle justice.”

He assured that efforts are underway to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved. The Command appealed to the public to remain calm and to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The incident has raised concerns among human rights advocates over the recurring trend of mob actions.
