According to NIHSA Director-General, Mr. Umar Mohammed, the floods could affect “more than 631 communities and over 50 critical transport and infrastructure points.”

He said the risk levels range from “moderate to very high” and could “disrupt highways and bridges,” threaten “lives, livelihoods, agriculture and public infrastructure,” and lead to “water contamination and disease outbreaks.”

The affected states include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

NIHSA urged federal and state emergency agencies to “activate contingency plans” and deploy response teams.

It also advised local leaders to “intensify sensitisation campaigns” and identify “evacuation routes” for vulnerable residents.

Mohammed said, “This alert is to safeguard lives and property, and we call for proactive measures across all levels.”
