PDP Replies Wike Concerning National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to move forward with its National Convention, which is scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, said during the inauguration of the convention committee that opponents of the event were “detractors, who will not succeed.”

He insisted that the PDP is “alive and strong” and ready to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The decision to proceed with the convention comes despite a separate meeting held on Monday night by a faction of the PDP, which includes members loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

This group, calling itself “Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders,” presented “fresh conditions” for the convention.

They demanded that the National Chairman of the party remain in the North-Central zone, and they strongly stated, “we further, and very strongly hold that there should be no form of micro-zoning for peace and stability within the party.”

The group also called for “fresh, transparent, and inclusive congresses” in Ebonyi and Anambra States, as well as a “fresh and legitimate South-East Zonal Congress.”

They also requested that the “valid and legitimate South-South Congress” held in Calabar be respected.

In a communique, the group argued that a “credible National Convention must be anchored on transparency, fairness, and respect for the rule of law as well as inclusivity” to ensure the party can “reconcile internal disputes, uphold fairness, and respect constitutional processes.”
