U.S. Mission Sends Visa Ban Warning To Nigerians

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has urged Nigerian travellers to “adhere strictly to the terms” of their United States visas.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, the Mission warned that misusing a visa, particularly by “overstaying in the country beyond the authorised period,” could “jeopardise future travel” to the U.S. and lead to “severe consequences.”

The Mission’s statement read, “It’s important to use your US visa according to its terms. Misusing it, for example, by overstaying, may affect your ability to travel to the U.S. in the future.”

The warning follows a report by the U.S. Department of State that cited “over 700,000 visa overstays in 2023 alone,” with Nigeria among the top countries affected.

The article notes that the “1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act” imposes a “three-year ban” on reentry for those who overstay between 180 and 365 days and a “ten-year ban” for overstays exceeding a year.
