Conor McGregor Announces He Is Withdrawing From Irish Presidential Race

Former MMA fighter Conor McGregor has announced he is “withdrawing from the race for the Irish presidency.”

In a social media post, he wrote, “Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race,” adding that, “This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time.”

McGregor, who had announced his intention to run last September, was due to address meetings of Dublin City Council and Kildare County Council in an attempt “to get onto the ballot paper” for the election.

He claimed that he had been “sincere and genuine” in his intentions and was “truly humbled” by the “support and encouragement” he had received.

The former fighter went on to criticize the election eligibility rules in Ireland’s “outdated constitution,” calling them a “straitjacket” that prevents a “true democratic presidential election being contested” and ensures the election is “fixed to ensure only Establishment approved candidates may be selected on the ballot.”

He added, “This democratic deficit against the will of the Irish people has now been successfully magnified by my expression of interest.”

McGregor stated, “This is not the end, but the beginning of my political journey,” asserting, “I am driven by a commitment to improve lives, defend rights, and serve the Irish people with dedication and integrity. I will continue to serve my people on the global stage lobbying for Ireland’s best interest’s socially and economically – of that there is no doubt.”

He concluded with a metaphor, “This is a marathon. Not a sprint!”

McGregor recently lost a civil case against a woman who had accused him of “sexually assaulting her,” and he was found “civilly liable for assaulting” her in a Dublin hotel in 2018.

He was ordered to pay damages, and his appeal against the decision was rejected in July.
