How To Obtain A Tax Identification Number In Nigeria

According to the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), obtaining a “Tax Identification Number (TIN), or Tax ID, in Nigeria is a straightforward process,” and for many, it is “automatically generated.”

The process is “free of charge,” and individuals should avoid obtaining it through shortcuts.

The specific steps and required documents vary slightly for individuals and businesses.

For Individuals

Individuals can register for a TIN in one of three ways:

• Online Registration: If you do not have a Tax ID, you can apply on the Joint Tax Board (JTB) website, specifically the Tax ID “registration portal.”¹ On the portal, you will “Click on ‘Register for TIN (Individual),’” “Fill in the required information, including your NIN or BVN, and personal details,” and then “Submit the form.” Your TIN will be “generated and sent to you.”
• Physical Registration: Alternatively, you can visit the “nearest FIRS, State IRS tax office” with the necessary documents, including your “Accurate date of birth,” “Bank Verification Number (BVN),” “Registered Phone Number,” and your “Previous Tax Identification Number (if it applies).”
• Through a Tax Agent: You also have the option to hire an “accredited tax professional to handle your TIN registration.”

For Businesses

For businesses, the process is as follows:

1. First, “Register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).”
2. Next, “Visit the TIN Registration portal on the Federal Inland Revenue Service or the specific State tax revenue website,” or visit the “nearest FIRS office with CAC documents.”
3. “Complete the TIN registration process by providing business details.”
4. Finally, “The FIRS will verify information and issue your business a unique TIN.”

• “Certificate of Incorporation issued by CAC”
• “Memorandum and Articles of Association”
• “Proof of Business Address”
