Forbes Ranks Naira As Ninth Weakest Currency In Africa [FULL LIST]

The Nigerian Naira has been ranked as the ninth weakest currency in Africa, according to a Forbes currency calculator report for September 2025.

This ranking highlights the lingering pressure on Nigeria’s economy despite recent signs of easing inflation.

The Forbes currency calculator generates its data using the Open Exchange Rates API, sourcing real-time foreign exchange market data that updates every five minutes to reflect live trading values.

The system captures the influence of demand and supply, market sentiment, and broader economic conditions on currency performance.

According to the data, the Naira exchanged at ₦1,490 per $1, placing it among the weakest currencies on the continent.

The report noted the São Tomé & Príncipe Dobra at 22,282 per $1 as the weakest in Africa, followed by the Sierra Leonean Leone (20,970) and the Guinean Franc (8,680).

The full list of the ten weakest currencies included:

  3. Guinean Franc (8,680)
  4. Ugandan Shilling (3,503)
  5. Burundian Franc (2,968)
  6. Congolese Franc (2,811)
  7. Tanzanian Shilling (2,465)
  8. Malawian Kwacha (1,737)
  9. Nigerian Naira (₦1,490 per $1)
  10. Rwandan Franc (1,448)

In contrast, the report listed the Tunisian Dinar (2.90 per $1), Libyan Dinar (5.40), Moroccan Dirham (9.91), Ghanaian Cedi (12.31), and Botswanan Pula (14.15) as the five strongest currencies in Africa.
