President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted three separate letters to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of nominees for key federal appointments across three different commissions: the National Population Commission (NPC), the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The letters were read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday, as required by the constitutional and statutory provisions governing federal appointments.
In his first letter, dated July 30, 2025, President Tinubu, acting in line with Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), requested the Senate to confirm two nominees as Commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC):
- Hon. Dr. Joseph Haruna Kibu (Nasarawa State)
- Mr. Bularafa (Yobe State)
The President “expressed confidence in the competence of the nominees” and urged the Senate to give the request “expeditious consideration,” noting the importance of the NPC in “ongoing demographic planning and national development.”
The request was referred to the Committee on National Population and Identity with a one-week deadline.
In a separate correspondence, President Tinubu sought the confirmation of nominees to represent their respective states in the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the body responsible for revenue monitoring and disbursement. Those nominated include:
- Abubakar Wamako Bello (Sokoto State)
- Gboyega Olajide (Osun State)
- Another nominee from Bayelsa State
The President again urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nominees in the “usual expeditious manner.” This request was referred to the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs.
In a third letter dated August 6, 2025, President Tinubu forwarded the names of three nominees for appointment as Chairman and Commissioners of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aligning with Section 35 (1) and (3) of the Electricity Act, 2023.
The nominees are:
- Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat (Chairman)
- Mr. Abubakar Yusuf (Commissioner for Consumer Affairs)
- Dr. Faud Olayinka Animashaun (Commissioner for Finance and Management Services)
The President stressed that the appointments were part of “ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s electricity sector and improve service delivery.” This communication was referred to the Committee on Power for screening and feedback within one week.
