Council Of State Approves Amupitan As New INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has given its full support to the selection of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, or SAN) to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its new Chairman.

This information was made public on Thursday in a post on X by the President’s aide, Bayo Onanuga.

President Bola Tinubu had presented Amupitan’s name to the Council for approval during its meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.

This appointment comes after the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose “10-year tenure” concluded in October 2025.

According to Tinubu, Amupitan is a “58-year-old Professor of Law” who hails from Kogi State.

The President also told the Council that Amupitan is the “first person from the North-Central state” to be nominated for the position.
