Both Nigeria and the Benin Republic will be “shorthanded” for their “decisive Group C qualifier” in Uyo on Tuesday, as both teams have lost key players to accumulated yellow cards.
Benin coach Gernot Rohr verified that midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche are suspended and will miss the trip to Uyo after each received their second yellow card during the Cheetahs’ 1-0 win over Rwanda.
Rohr called the suspensions a blow but stressed that the team still controls its own World Cup qualification destiny in the tightly contested group.
In a conversation with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, which was shared via X on Friday, Rohr confirmed:“We have lost two players because of a second yellow card.”
“But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin and Nigeria). The decision is in our hands. This can be a little advantage. Big suspense until the end,” Rohr affirmed.

Nigeria will also be without one of its most dangerous attackers, Ademola Lookman, who is ruled out under CAF’s one-match suspension rule for accumulating two yellow cards in the qualifiers after receiving his second booking in the 64th minute of the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle sought to played down the impact of Lookman’s absence,” by emphasizing the team’s squad depth and mentality as they pursue qualification.
He stated:“The team remains focused and confident. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth to compete effectively. Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute.”
Chelle added that Lookman will continue to support the side from the bench and in the dressing room as Nigeria seeks the points necessary to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
The Super Eagles, who currently sit third in Group C behind Benin and South Africa, are scheduled to face the Squirrels of the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday, making the fixture “a must-win” to stay in contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
